Community Efforts

In keeping with the overall mission of Hillel Academy, “lifelong learners with sound moral values” public service lies at the heart of our school.

Regular Programmes

Children’s Homes
Volunteers raise money, donate artwork, clothes, food, toys and spend time playing games with children in several children’s homes throughout the year.  Past recipients have included Missionaries of the Poor, Marigold Place of Safety, Mona Rehab, St. Anthony’s Children’s Home, Reddies Place of Safety, SOS Children’s Village and the Salvation Army’s Nest Children’s Home.

School Outreach
Volunteers have raised funds to provide lunch treats, desks, chairs, water dispensers and Christmas treats for numerous Basic Schools throughout Kingston such as Highholborn Basic School, The Sandhurst Basic School, Shortwood United, The Maisie Green Basic School and Lalyce Gray Basic School.  An ongoing programme exists with Lalyce Basic School.  Every Christmas season Santa Claus arrives at the Prep School and collects gifts from our children to give to the children of these Basic Schools.

Ozanam Home for the Aged
The children gather toiletries, package them up nicely and take them to the Home for the Aged.  The children also spend time talking to and entertaining the elderly.

JSPCA
Hillel volunteers have assisted with the care of healthy animals by feeding them and playing with them.  The special attention given by our students is very important as animals are able to adjust to life at the shelter, and therefore, are more likely to be chosen by new owners.

Heart Health Fund Run
In an effort to help combat Heart Disease, volunteers participated in the Heart Foundation of Jamaica’s sponsored walk, jog and run event.  Hillel Academy has consistently won the top three prizes for the largest school team, most sponsorship from a school and largest amount collected by an individual school team member.

Jamaica
Cancer Society
Volunteers assist with the preparation for the Society’s annual fund raiser at the Police Officer’s Club.

Victims of Natural Disasters
Funds are raised to assist individuals and families in crisis in the aftermath of a natural disaster.  Past recipients have included Haiti, the Mustard Seed Home in Papine and the people of Portland, Jamaica.

Other initiatives have included:

  • Bustamante Hospital for Children
